多くのハンセン病患者たちが、信仰深い人々だった。
朝の起床時に、毎回の食事前に、友の旅立ちの前に、日曜の教会で…彼らはいつも深い祈りを捧げていた。

なぜそんなにも祈るのだろう。
素朴な疑問を持ちながら、ハンセン病患者の集落アルペとトゥンべに泊り込み、会話を重ねた。

「わしはもう明日食べる金もない。街に出て、神に乞うしかないようじゃ」ある時、老齢の元患者男性がそう口にした。
路上に座り、物乞いをすることを「神に乞う（祈る）」と。

病気にかかるということは、誰の責任でもない。
それなのに、小さな病原菌を宿したばかりに続く、困難な人生。
彼らにとって祈ること、すなわち神に語りかけ、誓い、寄り添い、
告白することが、つらい人生の中で光を見出す唯一の手段なのだろうか。

ケニアでは今も,毎年200人以上の新しいハンセン病患者が生まれている。

Most of leprosy patients are very religious.
After getting up in the morning, before every meal, before departure of their friends, and at the church on Sunday ...every time they pray so sincerely.

Why they pray so much
....holding a simple question I stayed in Alpe and Tumbe, which are the leprosy patients’ villages, and I could talk with them numerous times.

"I have no money to eat tomorrow. All I can do is to go to town and beg for god"
One day the old former patient murmured.
He regards begging on the street as pray for God.

They do not have any responsibility to become ill.
But once they get germ inside their body, they are forced to live with much difficulty.
Praying, in other words, to speak, confess, and nestle to the God might be the only way for them to have hope in their hard life.

In Kenya, there are more than 200 new leprosy patients every year.
